Ganesh immersion report

Vizag: City officials made all the necessary arrangements for immersion of Ganesh idols from Sunday onwards. About 2500 idols were ready for immersion in and around Vizag.

Most of the idols in the city were designed with clay and paper. Number of police forces deputed to secure the crowd at the Bay of Bengal. All the committees were given proper guidelines during the Ganesh festival.

Temporary gates were installed at the beaches for safe guard. Usually immersion process will complete in one or two days in city depends on the quantity of idols installed in city. Some of the committees have decided to dip their idols with milk and water at the same venue, where they were offered rituals during the past nine days.

Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation sanitation crew were on duty since the day of immersion process. They were in busy in collecting the wastage material utilised during the ritual period and transported them to dumpyard. Numerous Ganesh idols came out from the sea water on Monday morning.

Protecting environment

This year festival had come with an theme to protect environment such as not to use hard colours, plaster of paris and other heavy material for the designing of idols, not to immerse fruits, offered flowers, coconuts, etc should not be immersed into sea waters.

The Vizagites has launched a campaign to promote the use of eco-friendly Ganesha idols. 'Eco-friendly idols are a concept that can really make a difference to the environment.
There is a need to awaken people to the hazards of plaster of Paris (PoP) idols and the DNA Eco-Ganesha campaign has been an ideal method to communicate the benefits and encourage the shift towards eco-friendly idols and decorations,' one of the environmentalist campaigner said.

According to experts, PoP idols do not dissolve easily in seawater as compared to those made of clay. Anyhow this year is a eco friendly year to this festival.
