Amukta Malyada translated into English

Krishna temple built by Sri Krishna Devaraya Vizag: Understand Amuktamalyada is a tough job, announced greatest poets in 19 th century. It was a typical writing by Sri Krishna Devaraya which comprises poetic face rather than story. An linguist lover, Sistla Srinivas an Associate Professor of Art History and Aesthetics in the Department of Fine Arts, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam made an excellent attempt.

His rendering into English of the 16th century Telugu classic, Amuktamalyada, composed by the celebrated Vijayanagara king, Krishnadeva Raya, is a singular achievement, as the classic is considered a difficult one to master, and an English version was long overdue. He took 4 years time to complete it. Having inspiration from the architecture at Humpi (where Sistla had his childhood days).

About the expedition....
Speaking to City of Vizag, Sistla said, from the day one onwards he knows his target and decided to reach it even after many hurdles. It is the first ever English translation of story on Andal- a woman alwar (Tamil saints) who married the Lord Ranganadha of Srirangam.

It is a creative individual what bothers me most, especially after receiving the first printed copy of my translation of Amuktamalyada, he said.

About the book....
Krishna Devaraya, is an alrounder. He is a great poet, great ruler, social reformer etc. Himself maintained Bhuvana Vijayam consits of eight great poets like Peddana, Ramalinga and others. He is very much equivalent to the poets in his court.

He want to prove himself better than his poets (it is an imagination from the authors point of view), he compiled such a big epic. Most of the his writings explained the nativity of the surroundings, story part is less. The script is tough to understand.

Author used to present art of Vijayanagara system in his writings during translation. After completing this yagna, I took next challenge to translate Manu Charitra of Allasani Peddana.

About the author...

Com. at the Hindu College, Guntur, B.F.A. (art history) at the Chamarajendra Academy of Visual Arts (CAVA), Mysore, and M.F.A. (art criticism) at the Faculty of Fine Arts, M. S. University, Baroda.

Indian Vedic contribution is a reservoir of Vibrant Information and
Harmonious Creativity. May the womb of nature embrace all with
tranquil blessings from this day forward. Let this attract one's
attention affecting them positively. It is a Sanctuary of the Self a
Creative Venue which serves as an Enduring Expression of Lightness,
where a peaceful Atmosphere with Sunlight Flows and serene atmosphere
prevail.

In the storm of life we struggle through myriads of stimuli of
pressure, stress, and multi problems that seek for a solution and
answer. We are so suppressed by the routine of this every life style
that most of us seem helpless. However, if we look closely to ancient
techniques we shall discover the magnificent way to understand and
realize the ones around us and mostly ourselves. If only we could stop
for a moment and allow this to happen. May all beings be happy (Loka
Samastha Sukhino Bhavanthu)

The photograph shows the Krishna temple built by Sri Krishna Deva Raya, not his poem, Amuktamalyada. So do change the caption of the photo accordingly.

Srinivas Sistla
